Picturesque Scenery of Loushanguan

Loushanguan is an important fortress in Guizhou with military strategic value. At the beginning of 1935, the Central Red Army fought for it two times, which sowed the seeds of revolution. This piece of land where the Red Army once fought has now become a scenic spot of red culture and attracted countless tourists from home and aboard.

Chairman Mao Zedong wrote a poem named “Loushan Pass: to the Tune of Yi Qin E” after the victory of the Loushanguan Battle. The Loushanguan Scenic Spot builds ten attractions with traditional Chinese bowers, pavilions and pagodas and names them according to the images in the poem. In the attractions, such as Baizhang Step, Changkong Bridge and Yanming Pagoda, visitors can enjoy the picturesque scenery of massive mountain ranges.

Going back to January 1935, the Central Red Army captured Loushanguan for the first time to ensure the rest and reorganization of the main forces in Zunyi City and the security of the Zunyi Meeting. After the meeting, due to the failure of the Tucheng Battle, the Red Army crossed the Chishui River for the first time to get rid of the besieging and chasing by the Kuomintang Army. Then the Red Army left Zhaxi Town in Yunnan Province, crossed the Chishui River for the second time and marched toward Zunyi City. During the march, the Red Army occupied Loushanguan and entered Zunyi City again. In the battle, they had wiped out two divisions and eight regiments, captured over 3,000 enemies and won the first big victory since the Long March.

The Exhibition Hall of Loushanguan Battle houses the military supplies and daily necessities used by the Red Army at that time, such as mortars, rifles, sabers, lanterns, cloth bags, straw sandals, coir raincoats, quilts and cooking utensils. The museum collects 172 cultural relics and uses modern cyclorama film and electronic sand table to reconstitute the scenes of the fierce battle of that year.

Visitors can also enjoy the performance of “Great Victory in Lou shan guan”. The performance is based on the history of the Loushanguan Battle and lasts nearly an hour with over 300 actors. It realistically reproduced the scenes of the battlefield.

Before they leave, tourists can select souvenirs, such as straw sandals, Red Army bags, retro shoulder bags and old-fashioned water bottles, in stores in the scenic spot to cherish the precious memories.
