Pingtang Bridge in Guizhou province is called “the bridge in the air”, which boasts the highest concrete bridge towers in the world.

The bridge lies between mountains rather than the riverbanks, crossing the Caoduhe Canyon with a span of 2,135 meters. The main body of the bridge passes through its three bridge towers, which stand like three colossal diamonds above the canyon..

The three towers measure 320 meters, 332 meters and 298 meters in height, as high as three 100-storey buildings in the canyon. On a misty day, the faintly discernible bridge looks mysterious and romantic.

Before the completion of Pingtang Bridge, Caoduhe Canyon is a natural barrier between Pingtang County and Luodian County in the south of Guizhou province. Thanks to the bridge, the transportation arteries in the south of Guizhou were connected. Pingtang-Luodian Expressway was thus open to traffic, shortening the travel time between Pingtang and Luodian from two and a half hours to one hour.

When building the three bridge towers in the canyon, each tower was divided into 59 different parts at the beginning. A new concrete model was made every 6 meters on the spot and then added to the main body of the tower. This requires great skills in measurement and positioning. The task is so complicated that it is even rare in the history of bridge building across the world. The engineers and workers of the bridge have realized a satisfactory achievement with their efforts and abilities. In the three and a half years, they constantly encountered world-class difficulties and managed to solve them. A tourist called Zhang Tong once exclaimed, “To build a bridge connecting two mountains, it requires advanced technologies and engineers’ efforts and contributions. The bridge is also an embodiment of China’s continuous development.”

The completion of the Pingtang Bridge adds “a bridge in the air” into the list of Pingtang’ s scenic spots mainly related to science, such as the Astronomy Town, FAST(Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) and Nan Rendong Memorial Hall. Beside the world-class Pingtang Bridge, “Pingtang Bridge” sightseeing and service area, an international holiday resort featuring moutain and outdoor sports , was constructed.
