Explore Guizhou’s revolutionary memories in Wujiangdu in Zunyi

The people of Guizhou have a special affection for the Wujiang River, magnificent in its form and profound in the culture. The Central Red Army crossed the River during the Long March and advanced to Zunyi, which make Wujiangdu a red tourist attraction with numerous battlefield sites, relics and red cultural relics.

In Wujiangdu Scenic Area, there are lush forests, ubiquitous cliffs , mountains towering into the sky, and winding mountain roads. With the historical events such as the Long March and Red Army solders crossing the Wujing River, there are many historical relics including Red Army Street, Wujiangdu, Laochashan Pass, Nanmudu, Daobashui and Tuanxi. In addition, provincial protected cultural relics units such as Yuan’s Residence are also here.

The history of the Red Army crossing the Wujiang River is divided into two sections with the Zunyi Conference as the dividing line: before the Zunyi Conference, the Red Army was forced to cross the Wujiang River and enter into Zunyi; after the Zunyi Conference, the Red Army crossed the Wujiang River and enter into Yunnan.

On January 15, 1935, “The Red Star”, the Red Army’s official newspaper, recorded in details the battle of crossing the Wujiang River with the title of “The Great Beginning: The First Battle in 1935”. After the tragic Xiangjiang Battle, the Central Red Army dropped sharply from 86,000 at the time of starting the Long March to more than 30,000. After the Tongdao Conference, the Central Red Army decided to depart to Guizhou. From January 1 to 6 of 1935, in spite of heavy enemy gunfire, the Red Army crossed the Wujiang River from three ferries including Jiangjiehe in Weng'an County, Huilongchang in Yuqing County, and Chashan Pass in Kaiyang County by bamboo rafts and floating bridges made by themselves. Then, they entered into Zunyi, achieving the great historic turning point.

After crossing the Chishui River four times, the Red Army chose to turn to the south and march directly towards the Wujiang River in order to attract the enemy by launching a large-scale guerrilla war, thus enabling the main force of the Red Army to choose a more favorable route northward into Sichuan. On March 28, more than 30,000 Red Army soldiers came to Jinsha County on the north bank of the Wujiang River, preparing to cross the Wujiang River and go south. From March 29th to April 2nd, 1935, the Red Army crossed the Wujiang from ferries such as Tiziyan, Datang, Jiangkou and swept into Guiyang. They left the 400,000 enemy solders chasing at their heels at the northern side of the Wujiang River, achieving a decisive victory in the strategic transfer of the Red Army.

“Warriors went across Chine on foot, crossed Chishui four times beyond the expectations of enemies, crossed the Wujiang River and departed from Guiyang to Kunming.” With the revolutionary song of Crossing Chishui Four Times, Guizhou move
