Guizhou selected among intl successful cases of poverty reduction

The third list of global poverty reduction cases recently released by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations included two cases from Southwest China's Guizhou province.

The list collects excellent cases of poverty reduction from organizations and individuals that are concerned about poverty reduction around the world, and aims to promote and share successful poverty reduction practices through these cases.

One of the cases from Guizhou was Jinping county's successful attempt to alleviate poverty via the goose industry. Relying on its excellent natural environment and breeding tradition, the county attracted the world's largest shuttlecock manufacturer RSL and formed a complete industrial chain consisting of goose breeding, shuttlecock production and badminton event organization.

Currently, the annual output of Jinping's gooses is more than 2 million. The county produces more than 3 million sets of shuttlecocks annually with a total output value exceeding 1 billion yuan ($140.3 million), helping 13,000 families increase their incomes.

The other selected case was the development of intangible cultural heritage items in Shibing county. Guizhou Bangxiangyu Miao Embroidery Garment Development Co took advantage of Shibing's intangible cultural heritage resources and built workshops in Shibing's six Miao villages to make Miao embroidery.

The company offers training sessions annually to improve the embroidery skills of local women and provides raw materials to help them realize industrial-scale production.

So far, the company has helped 2,300 leftover women and female migrant workers find jobs, 2,180 of which were impoverished. Their annual per capita income reached 12,000 yuan.
