Guizhou rice promoted at UN Biodiversity Conference

Zhou Congjun, Party secretary of Congjiang county, Southwest China's Guizhou province, shared Congjiang's experience in producingorganic agricultural products while simultaneously preventing environmental pollution at a side meeting of the COP 15, which is being held in Montreal, Canada until Dec 19.

According to Zhou, Congjiang plants rice while raising fish and ducks at the same time, forming a complete biological chain with green and circular development.

The fish and ducks can eat pests and weeds in the rice paddies, and swim to loosen the soil for rice. Their feces is also a good source ofnutrients for the rice.

In recent years, Congjiang has been devoted to green development and utilized their water, soil, wetland and biodiversity resources. During this time, it has also applied to be a national wetland park for overall regional protection.

Kam Sweet Rice is a special rice variety bred and cultivated in Congjiang during its long history of rice cultivation. As Congjinag took efforts in protecting and developing the rice, local tourism has boomed and people started to go back to Congjiang to start their own businesses.

One start-up business owner established a live broadcast team to introduce the whole process of growing and refining Kam Sweet Rice to the world. This broadcast not only increased rice sales and local income, but it also allowed others to learn about Congjiang's local culture.

Currently, Congjiang is promoting the integrated development of agriculture and tourism, to increase the income of local farmers, boost revenue of local businesses, and to further protect the environment.
